The Refugee Platform in Egypt was deeply saddened to learn the news of the death of forcibly displaced Sudanese citizen and asylum seeker Hamid Ali Adam Musa (64), after he was taken by Egyptian authorities to the Embassy of the Republic of Sudan in Cairo to obtain a travel document in preparation for his deportation to Sudan, according to a statement issued by the Sudanese Embassy on June 1st, 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n

While RPEGY extends our sincere condolences and sympathy to Hamid Ali Adam Musa\u2019s family and loved ones, we are also deeply concerned regarding the recurrence of deaths among refugees and asylum seekers during periods of detention or during procedures related to deportation. The total number of deaths of detained forcibly displaced Sudanese citizens documented by RPEGY has reached 12 since the beginning of this year, which necessitates greater transparency and disclosure regarding detention conditions and the health care provided to detained people, particularly the elderly and those with health conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sudden death of a 64-year-old man, Hamid Ali Adam Musa, in the context of procedures aimed at deporting him from the country, raises legitimate questions regarding the conditions of his detention and the health and psychological conditions he faced in the period leading up to his death. Hamid Ali Adam Musa\u2019s sudden death also requires confirmation of whether he received adequate medical care and whether due humanitarian safeguards were upheld during his detention as well as while he was being transferred between the relevant authorities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These concerns are heightened by the repeated testimonies documented by the Refugee Platform in Egypt regarding the detention conditions faced by some refugees and asylum seekers, which included allegations of deliberate starvation, severe overcrowding in detention facilities, mistreatment, and deprivation of basic necessities. These accounts raise grave concerns regarding the health and psychological consequences of inhumane conditions, particularly for the dependent groups, specifically the elderly and chronically ill people.<\/span><\/p>\n

RPEGY emphasizes that this tragic incident cannot be viewed as an isolated or random event; rather, it represents a new and tragic chapter in broader policies pursued by security authorities against migrants and refugees. RPEGY has repeatedly warned that these policies have catastrophic consequences for the right to life and personal safety.<\/span><\/p>\n

This incident brings to mind the death of forcibly displaced Sudanese citizen and asylum seeker Mubarak Qamar al-Din Majzoub Abdullah (67), who died inside the Shorouk Police Station in Cairo Governorate at dawn on Thursday, February 5th, 2026, as a result of inhumane detention conditions and gross medical negligence following his arbitrary arrest.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time, RPEGY affirms that the death of any person in custody or during deportation proceedings requires an immediate, comprehensive, and independent investigation to fully uncover the circumstances and conditions surrounding the incident and to determine accountability where appropriate.<\/span><\/p>\n
