They also seized several items from his apartment (3 laptops). He was arrested on the background of his announcement of his conversion to the Christian religion via his Facebook page in 2013, two years before he came to Egypt. He arrived in Egypt and sought asylum with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The EIPR expressed concern last year through a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eipr.org\/press\/2022\/06\/%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%AF%D8%B1%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%B5%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D8%AA%D8%AD%D8%B0%D8%B1-%D9%85%D9%86-%D8%AA%D8%B1%D8%AD%D9%8A%D9%84-%D8%B7%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A8-%D9%84%D8%AC%D9%88%D8%A1-%D9%8A%D9%85%D9%86%D9%8A-%D8%A5%D9%84%D9%89-%D8%A8%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%AF%D9%87-%D8%A8%D8%B3%D8%A8%D8%A8-%D8%A5%D8%B9%D9%84%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%87-%D8%B9%D9%86-%D8%AA%D8%AD%D9%88%D9%84%D9%87-%D9%84%D9%84%D9%85%D8%B3%D9%8A%D8%AD%D9%8A%D8%A9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on its website about the forced deportation of Abdul-Baqi, as he belongs to the Christian minority in Yemen, fearing for his life due to the situation there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UN Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Religion or Belief and the Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants sent a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spcommreports.ohchr.org\/TMResultsBase\/DownLoadPublicCommunicationFile?gId=27403\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">letter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Egyptian authorities in June last year stating that prosecuting him \u201con the grounds that he publicly spoke about his conversion to Christianity, which, if confirmed, would amount to the judicial persecution of an individual for the peaceful holding and expression of his religious beliefs.\u201d The Special Rapporteurs also requested \u201cdetailed information about the current status of the judicial proceedings initiated against Mr. Abdo, the established legal<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and procedural safeguards designed to protect his rights under the law \u2013national and international \u2013 and how these safeguards are effectively implemented.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Refugees Platform in Egypt (RPE) issued a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rpegy.org\/editions\/%d9%8a%d8%ac%d8%a8-%d8%b9%d9%84%d9%89-%d8%a7%d9%84%d8%b3%d9%84%d8%b7%d8%a7%d8%aa-%d8%a7%d9%84%d9%85%d8%b5%d8%b1%d9%8a%d8%a9-%d9%88%d9%82%d9%81-%d8%a7%d9%84%d8%aa%d8%b1%d8%ad%d9%8a%d9%84-%d8%a7%d9%84\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on June 25th, 2022, expressing concern regarding Abdul-Baqi\u2019s deportation and calling on the Egyptian government to abide by international conventions on refugee rights, refrain from deporting him, release him immediately and unconditionally, and stop deporting refugees and asylum seekers from Egypt
