MP Mohamed Abdelalem Daoud called for the release of hundreds of victims of unlawful migration who are being held in detention despite being released by the Public Prosecution during his speech at the House of Representatives’ plenary session on Tuesday.
“We must ask ourselves who and what drove young people to risk death, young people who go down to the sea where the survival rate is not more than 10%, which means a 90% chance of death” the MP stated.
Addressing the Speaker of Parliament, the MP continued “Go back to the area where the boats go out, which I have during my constituency, where the boats pass; and the gangs and people there are victims who were released by the Public Prosecution and are still in prison until now, by the hundreds, despite the Public Prosecution’s release of the victims.”
“But gangs operate because they have the opportunity to operate,” Dawoud told the speaker, “And I witnessed corruption around these areas. In his speech, Dawoud singled out his constituents from Burj Mighayzil of Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate and Green Island, while stating: “Release the detainees who were victimized by the locals and residents of the region. Prosecute the gangs and prosecute the officials who took fiefdoms around Burj Mighayzil and the island.”

On February 16th, Egypt’s Public Prosecution issued an order to examine unlawful migration cases nationwide after hundreds of grievances were made from families concerning their relatives’ arrests, as their relatives were charged with unlawful migration cases and imprisoned despite their lack of involvement in any migrant smuggling activities and a lack of evidence overall. After the Public Prosecution’s decision to release their relatives, security services refused to implement the decision and arbitrarily detained those who were granted release; then re-accuse them in new cases in the same region or other parts of the country on the same charges for which they were already released.
