The Refugee Platform in Egypt (RPE) and the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) are releasing an in-depth analytical report on the draft asylum law that was referred to the House of Representatives. This report examines the rhetoric of the law’s articles, which threatens to eliminate basic protections for refugees and grant overarching authority to a planned committee that could lead to the abuse of systemic power. The report also includes an in-depth assessment of articles of the law that ignore the humanitarian conditions of refugees and penalize asylum seekers for crimes related to their methods of entry into Egypt. This report calls for the involvement of international and local organizations in reviewing the law before the draft law is put to a vote to ensure fair regulation that respects civil and human rights. An in-depth analysis of the draft law can be found here.
