No climate justice without an open civic space!

This year, the United Nations’ global climate conference is taking place in Egypt, COP27 – a country described by local activists and exiles, as well as NGOs, as one of the most repressive regimes in the world. Through surveillance, intimidation, and arbitrary arrests and detentions, it has been trying for years to break any serious opposition. COP27 is now being used by this very regime to put itself in the best light before an international audience while continuing to suppress any criticism or any move towards civil liberties in Egyptian civil society,

It is necessary to take a clear position here, to ignore the struggles of civil society in Egypt as an “outsiders” to the climate negotiations during the COP would be a huge mistake, instead, we must *especially* during this climate conference take a closer look and point out the links: no There can be climate justice if political liberties are systematically and violently taken away, indigenous people oppressed and displaced, and refugees imprisoned and exploited. And I pushed back.
