From Sudan to Egypt: Trapped in Sudan…Evacuation Plans Continue Egyptian MFA Announces Moving its Diplomatic Staff from Khartoum to Elsewhere in Sudan

Status Report on the Period Between 22-26 April 2023:

  • On the morning of April 24th, Egypt announced the start of evacuation procedures for its people in Sudan. According to an Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman, 436 Egyptians were evacuated through Sudan’s land borders yesterday evening. However, there are still approximately ten thousand Egyptians stranded inside Sudan who have not yet been evacuated.
  • Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zaid, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), stated that “a member of the Egyptian embassy was shot,” without providing further details, and urged everyone to exercise utmost caution.
  • The Egyptian government announced the death of Mohamed Al-Gharawi, an assistant to the administrative attaché at the Egyptian Embassy in Sudan, on his way to the Egyptian embassy.
  • In another statement, the MFA announced the establishment of an operations room to follow up and communicate with #Egyptians_in_Sudan and their families and allocated the following hotlines:

  • The pleas of Egyptians for evacuation continue, with testimonies from stranded Egyptians in conflict areas reporting gunfire in the direction of their shelters.
  • Egyptian students in Sudan appealed to the Egyptian government to evacuate the body of the Egyptian student, Saber Nasr El-Din, to bury him in his hometown in Assiut Governorate. Saber had died due to his inability to secure the insulin dose he needed.
  •  Later, his father announced the start of the burial procedures in Khartoum, after failed attempts to retrieve his body.
  • On the evening of April 24th, the Egyptian MFA announced the evacuation of 134 and 334 Egyptian citizens from Sudan in two successive phases. Thus, the total number of those evacuated is 904 Egyptian citizens, while approximately ten thousand Egyptians remain inside Sudan.
  • On the evening of April 25th, the Egyptian government announced the continuation of the evacuation operations, bringing the total number of evacuated Egyptians to 1,539 Egyptians so far.
  • Egyptian drivers trapped inside Sudan issue an SOS.
  • The Egyptian MFA, April 26th: “We are transferring members of the Egyptian diplomatic and consular mission and the technical offices of the embassy from Khartoum and repositioning it in another location in Sudan so that it can follow up on the implementation of the national plan to evacuate the Egyptians stranded there, as circumstances require.”
